Key facts

  • Status: restricted; no drinking in public from 10.30pm to 7am
  • Law: Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Act 2015
  • In force: 1 April 2015
  • Fine: up to S$1,000; repeat offenders up to S$2,000 and/or three months in jail

Why does Singapore ban late-night public drinking?

The Ministry of Home Affairs said the law aims to reduce public disorder and nuisance caused by people drinking in public. It began reviewing liquor rules in September 2012, after public complaints, and the issue gained urgency after the December 2013 riot in Little India. Lawmakers passed the act on 29 January 2015.

Where does the ban apply?

It covers all public places across Singapore, such as parks, void decks under housing blocks, beaches and roadsides. It does not apply to licensed bars, restaurants and other premises, so you can still drink in a bar after 10.30pm, or at home. People can also apply for a liquor consumption permit for events in public places.

What are Liquor Control Zones?

Geylang and Little India are declared Liquor Control Zones, where public drinking is also banned for longer periods on weekends, public holidays and the eves of public holidays. Penalties there are one and a half times higher than elsewhere.

Can you buy alcohol after 10.30pm in Singapore?

Not from shops. Supermarkets and convenience stores cannot sell takeaway alcohol between 10.30pm and 7am. Since 2019, food products containing alcohol, such as desserts, have been exempt; the ban still covers alcoholic drinks.

Singapore’s rules are strict but not unusual in the region; compare the UAE’s alcohol licence rules or Saudi Arabia’s alcohol ban. More rules are on the Singapore bans page.
