On December 3, 2006, Iran temporarily blocked access to YouTube and other sites, citing violations of social and moral codes of conduct after a video of an Iranian soap opera star was posted. The block was later lifted but reinstated after Iran’s 2009 presidential election.
In 2012, Iran reblocked access to YouTube, along with Google, following the release of the controversial ‘Innocence of Muslims’ film trailer on the platform. Despite the ban, some local startups, television shows, celebrities, and reformist politicians continue to use the website.
