On February 12, 2026, Roskomnadzor imposed a full nationwide block on YouTube, making it inaccessible without a VPN. This decision followed years of escalating tensions between the platform and the Russian state, particularly after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Russian authorities accused Google of refusing to restore pro-Kremlin accounts and spreading ‘false information’ about the war, leading to massive fines. YouTube, in turn, banned state-funded Russian media and propaganda channels globally and suspended monetization services in Russia.
Users experienced significant slowdowns in video loading speeds from mid-2024, which authorities initially claimed were planned and purposeful. By August 2024, YouTube mobile platforms also became unusable, and Google shut off AdSense to all Russian citizens.
