Russia blocked Roblox nationwide on 3 December 2025 and lifted the block on 10 June 2026, after the company agreed to change how the platform works for Russian children. The ban lasted a little over six months.

Why did Russia ban Roblox?

The communications regulator Roskomnadzor said Roblox had repeatedly spread materials that justified extremist and terrorist activity, encouraged violence and promoted “LGBT propaganda”. It said it had sent the company several notices during 2025 demanding that banned material be removed before it restricted access.

The decision fitted a wider pattern. In the two years before the Roblox block, Russia cut off Discord, Signal and Viber, and in February 2026 it went on to block WhatsApp and YouTube.

How did children react?

The backlash was unusual for Russia. Dozens of people protested in the Siberian city of Tomsk on 14 December 2025, holding placards against the ban. Ekaterina Mizulina, who heads a state-backed internet monitoring group, said she had received about 63,000 emails from schoolchildren and parents complaining about it.

Why was the ban lifted?

On 10 June 2026 the Digital Development Ministry said Roblox had “fully complied” with Russian law and was available again across the country. The ministry said the company had added a way to restrict games by age group and had promised to fight inappropriate content.

The return came with limits. Russian players found that in-game chat was no longer available to them, so the version they can use is more restricted than in most other countries.

Is Roblox banned in Russia now?

No. Roblox works in Russia again, but without chat, and it could be blocked again if Roskomnadzor finds new violations. Turkey, which blocked Roblox earlier on similar child-safety grounds, has not reached the same kind of deal; see our Turkey Roblox entry.
