Egypt banned Roblox in February 2026, making it one of the first countries in Africa to block the platform. The decision came during a wider push by Egyptian lawmakers to protect children from online risks.

Who ordered the Roblox ban in Egypt?

The Supreme Council for Media Regulation (SCMR) made the decision. Its vice president, Essam El-Amir, announced it during a Senate session on 1 February 2026, while senators were debating the dangers children face online. The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) was tasked with carrying out the technical block, which began on 4 February.

Why did Egypt block Roblox?

Officials cited risks to children and teenagers, including concerns about their moral, educational and psychological wellbeing. Roblox lets users create their own games and chat with strangers, which regulators in several countries say makes it hard to moderate. Egypt did not publish a list of specific content that led to the decision.

The ban was part of a broader set of moves in early 2026. The cabinet reviewed steps to shield children from harmful content on social media and gaming services, and the House of Representatives said it would look at draft rules on children’s use of social media.

Did Roblox respond?

On 6 February 2026, Roblox said it was willing to talk to Egyptian authorities about the block. The regulators have not said publicly what the company would need to change for access to return.

How does Egypt’s ban compare with other countries?

Egypt joined several governments in the Middle East that have blocked or restricted Roblox on child-safety grounds. Not every ban has lasted: Russia reopened Roblox in June 2026 after the company added age-based limits, while Turkey’s block has run since 2024.
